Dracaena marginata 'Colorama'..................Colorama Marginata - As above, but the foliage on this cultivar is medium green, white, and pink. The D. marginata can                                                                                tolerate low, medium or high light, medium moisture. When used in low light situations, less watering is required. It                                                                                     would prefer medium or high light.
Crassula argentea...........................................Jade Plant - This succulent can be very long lasting indoors. Low to medium moisture requirements. Tolerant of low,                                                                                   medium, or high light situations. Relatively slow growth makes it long lasting, and does not need repotting as often as                                                                                 species with faster growth. Also available in a small leafed variety.

Ivy, Variegated Algerian......................................Hedera caneriensis var. algeriensis 'variegata' - White and green variegation. Usually used in a hanging basket                                                                                           indoors, or in pots where they are allowed to take on a hanging or trailing habit. Prefer medium to high light, and                                                                                         medium to high moisture levels. May attract Mealybug, use a systemic insecticide to treat.

Ivy, Algerian..........................................................Hedera caneriensis var. algeriensis - Usually used in a hanging basket indoors, or in pots where they are allowed to                                                                                    take on a hanging or trailing habit. Prefer medium to high light, and medium to high moisture levels. May attract                                                                                          Mealybug, use a systemic insecticide to treat. Deep green foliage.

Briscoli Hybrid...................................................no common name - We do not know much about this plant, other than it is very tough and durable. The foliage is a                                                                                     medium green color, and the plant can take on a hanging, creeping, or climbing habit, depending upon the situation                                                                                    that it is placed into. This plant likes moisture, but will survive if allowed to dry, but not for too long!                                                                                                             (Possibly a Philodendron of some type).
Croton...............................................................Codiaeum variegatum - One of the brightest foliage plants for the interiorscape. The multitude of leaf variegation makes                                                                                 it interesting, and a great color accent to brighten up poorly lit areas. Tolerant of low light, but prefers medium to high.                                                                                 Medium moisture requirements. Many varieties available. Often people remark at the cost of Crotons, please note, that                                                                                they can be very slow growing, which translates to higher costs. It can take several years to produce a nice specimen.
Adiantum spp........................................................Maidenhair Fern - Lacy, feathery foliage. These perform at their best when provided with ample moisture and a cool                                                                                     location. Filtered light is desired, and it is best to keep them away from a hot, bright south facing window. A soil                                                                                         high in organic material is preferred.
Cinnamomum kotoense 'Canela' ................Canela - This is a cultivar, very closely related to the cinnamon plant, native to Asia. This is a fairly recent introduction                                                                                 for the interiorscape. It does very well in low, medium or high light, and prefers to be kept relatively moist at all times,                                                                                  although it can tolerate some periods of drought conditions. Medium, glossy foliage, and when used in high light, it                                                                                     flowers in the summer months, bunches of small white flowers.
Areca Palm ...........................................................Chrysalidocarpus lutescens - This is what we consider the 'disposable' indoor palm. Prefers to be kept relatively                                                                                          moist, and in a higher light situation. Can experience some mealybug problems, which is easily enough treated with                                                                                   a systemic insecticde. We have found that many people are not able to keep this palm in the best of conditions.                                                                                         Keep well fertilized and watered in order to keep it as full as possible, but do not allow it to sit in water.
Aspidistra elatior 'Milky Way'................................Variegated Cast Iron Plant - Uncommon, expensive, and not often available! BUT, if it is, it is well worth picking up,                                                                                      because it is a plant with a very long life expectancy, and it may not come around for a while. Very durable.                                                                                                Speckled white on a deep green leaf. As above.

Adonidia Palm......................................................Veitchia merillii, Christmas Palm, Manila Palm - When used indoors, these prefer a relatively bright location. If                                                                                            located indoors in an area with low humidity, some spider mite problems may occur. To aid in prevention, try to                                                                                          provide more humidity by placing pebbles in a saucer under the pot, and keeping filled with water, but not so much                                                                                      that the soil stays in contact with the water.

African Violet.........................................................Saintpaulia Hybrids - Many new varieties are released to the market each year. The most important factor in keeping                                                                                   these healthy indoors is to NOT get the foliage wet. When providing water, apply ONLY to the soil. This is easiest                                                                                       done by placing the pot in a saucer, and filling with water so that the soil is absorbed from the bottom of the pot.                                                                                         Keep away from direct afternoon sunlight. Fertilize regularly with a liquid solution.
Anthurium salviniae............................................Birdsnest Anthurium - Large, deep green, attractive foliage. Can tolerate low light situations. Provide ample nutrients,                                                                                   and medium moisture levels.
Aechmea fasciata.................................................Silver Vase  - Silver foliage with pink blossom. An old time favourite bloomer for indoors. Medium moisture, humidity                                                                                    and nutrient needs. Do not let the soil stay wet, but rather, put water in the cup, or the center of the plant.
Aglaonema assorted varieties............................Patented & Non-Patented varieties available. Each year there are new varieties being introduced. An old-time                                                                                              favourite for indoors. These can tolerate very low light situations, and prefer to be kept with a low to medium                                                                                                moisture level in the soil.
Algerian Ivy............................................................Hedera caneriensis var. algeriensis - Usually used in a hanging basket indoors, or in pots where they are allowed to                                                                                     take on a hanging or trailing habit. Prefer medium to high light, and medium to high moisture levels. May attract                                                                                          Mealybug, use a systemic insecticide to treat. Deep green foliage.
Algerian Ivy, variegated.........................................Hedera caneriensis var. algeriensis 'variegata' - White and green variegation. Prefer medium to high light, and                                                                                         medium to high moisture levels. May attract Mealybug, use a systemic insecticide to treat.

Low to high light, no direct sunlight. Yellow flowering. One of the few flowering plants                                                                                       for indoors.
Aralia Balfour Variegated...................................Polyscias pinnata  - White and green variegation, small leaf. Tolerant of low, medium, or high light situations. Fairly                                                                                    drought tolerant, but prefers medium moisture.
Aralia elegantissima...........................................recently re-classified as Schefflera elegantissima - Very fine foliage, lacy, serrated. The foliage is a burgundy color.                                                                                     When used in the interiorscape, may attract mealybug, or spidermite. Increasing humidity around the plant will help                                                                                    in the prevention of pest problems. Treat with a systemic insecticide to combat any existing problems. Often used                                                                                      when larger (5' or more), take on a very upright, vertical growth habit.

Arboricola............................................................Schefflera arboricola, Dwarf Schefflera - Fluffy, full growth habit. One of the oldest of indoor varieties. Can tolerate low or                                                                                    high humidity, relatively low pest problems. Tolerates any light situation, from bright to low.
Arboricola 'Luseanne'..........................................Schefflera arboricola 'Luseanne' - Very full, compact growth habit. Shorter internodes that Sch. arboricola, which                                                                                         results in a much shorter growth habit and makes it more suitable for smaller pots and smaller spaces as it doesn't                                                                                    take up as much room. Easy care. This is a very under-utilised variety in Nassau. We highly recommend this plant                                                                                     for apartments or small living spaces. Very tolerant.
Arboricola 'Capella'..............................................Schefflera arboricola 'Capella'  - Some yellow variegation. Not as evident as S. arboricola 'Trinette', provides a darker                                                                                   green accent, with light splashes of yellow. Full growth habit, can be trained to many shapes. Tolerant of low,                                                                                             medium or high light situations.
Aspidistra elatior..................................................Cast Iron Plant - Very slow growing, which leads to a relatively high cost. One of the most tolerant plants in a very                                                                                      low light situation. Very hardy plant, hence the name! Prefers to be kept relatively moist, but is very tolerant of dry                                                                                       conditions as well. Very strong and dependable, highly recommended.
Asplenium nidis...................................................Bird's Nest Fern - Prefers higher moisture and humidity levels. Bright green foliage. Tolerant of low, medium or high                                                                                     light, but would prefer to be kept out of direct sunlight. Can get quite large, horizontally, up to several feet in                                                                                                diameter.
Auracaria heterophylla........................................Norfolk Island Pine - Prefers to be kept relatively moist, but not wet. Higher light is best, and higher humidity is                                                                                           desired. Deep green foliage, pine-like in appearance. Available as a small plant for a desktop, or anywhere up to 8                                                                                       feet tall or more. Larger specimens require quite a large area!
Australian Tree Fern...........................................Sphaeropteris cooperi - Not particularly recommended for the beginner. Prefers a high humidity situation, with                                                                                             medium to high moisture levels, and medium light. High light is tolerated, but does not tolerate direct sun too well,                                                                                      prefers indirect light. Does well in large continaers. Do not allow it to dry out.

Black Olive 'Shady Lady'..................................Bucida burseras 'Shady Lady'   - This cultivar of Black Olive is widely used indoors where a larger specimen is desired.                                                                               Typically, bright light is best. Average watering needs, do not let dry out, as foliage will shed. This is a good tree to use                                                                               in atriums, or hotel lobbies, large office entry areas, etc.
Boston Fern......................................................Nephrolepis exaltata - An old time classic interior plant selection. Provide ample moisture, and medium to high humidity                                                                              is best. Medium light is best, but it will tolerate low or high light. Usually available in several sizes.
Bottle Palm........................................................Hyophorbe lagenicaulis - When used in the interiorscape, the Bottle Palm can be very nice if cared for appropriately.                                                                                   Average moisture, without allowing the soil to dry out is best. Medium to high light is preferred. Scale insects are one                                                                                  of the few potential problems.

Cactus...............................................................Many different sizes and shapes, and styles! From a 2" pot, up to 7 gallon material. Grafted cactus are great to add                                                                                             color to a desk ot table, and the other cacti are nice on a windowsill. Remember that cacti are typically fond of                                                                                           desert type settings, which means that they do not like too much water. Allow soil to dry partially between                                                                                                 waterings. These will die quickly from overwatering, but not from underwatering. Bright light.
Cardboard Palm..............................................Zamia furfuracea (Z. maritima)- As this plant is tough outdoors, as it is indoors as well. The slow growth rate means                                                                                    that it prefers to be on the dry side rather than constantly moist. Bright light, or medium light is preferred.
Caryota mitis...................................................Fishtail Palm - Indoors, this palm requires moderate moisture levels, and a medium to bright light. Spider mites are a                                                                                   potential problem in dry settings. To prevent, raise the humidity level around the plant. Keep fairly well fertilized for the                                                                                 best foliage color.
Cast Iron Plant..................................................Aspidistra elatior - Very slow growing, which leads to a relatively high cost. One of the most tolerant plants in a very low                                                                              light situation. Very hardy plant, hence the name! Prefers to be kept relatively moist, but is very tolerant of dry                                                                                            conditions as well. Very strong and dependable, highly recommended.
Chamaedorea elegans..................................Neantha Bella Palm - When used indoors, the Parlor Palm, as it is sometimes called, can be very long lasting.                                                                                           Medium moisture, light, and humidity are preferred. Do not allow the soil to stay moist, but do not allow to dry                                                                                            completely. Great for smaller spaces, apartments, office reception areas etc.
Chamaedorea erumpens x seifrizii...............'Florida Hybrid' Bamboo Palm - A wonderful palm for the interiorscape. Long lasting, and relatively durable. Prefers                                                                                      medium moisture, nutrients, humidity, and light. Great vertical accent. Can be allowed to get quite large indoors. Slender                                                                             growth habit makes it suitable for tight spaces.
Chlorophytum comosum.............................Spider Plant - This plant is virtually indestructible provided that it is not kept too wet. Tolerant of relatively dry, or moist                                                                                soils. Low to bright light.
Christmas Cactus...........................................Schlumbergera hybrids, Holiday Cactus - Flowers November through March. A hanging or trailing cactus, with very                                                                                      beautiful conspicuous flowers, pink, red, orange, white. Great to add color to the interiorscape during the holiday                                                                                         season. Low to medium moisture, medium to high light.
Chrysalidocarpus lutescens.........................Areca Palm - This is what we consider the 'disposable' indoor palm.
Cordyline terminalis .......................................Ti Plant - Many varieties available; 'Cotton Candy' - light pink, 'Black Magic' - almost black, 'Red Sister' - most popular,                                                                                reddish leaf, many others. Used for the foliage color, a great color accent indoors. Medium to bright light, and medium                                                                                 moisture in the soil is preferred. Do not overwater. May be sensitive to water quality, if leaf tips begin to brown, use a                                                                                   more pure source, or allow tap water to sit uncovered for 24 hours before use.
Cryptanthus spp..............................................Earth Star - A very small terrestrial bromeliad that grows in the soil, as opposed to growing without soil (epiphytic).                                                                                     It would do well on a windowsill, or in a bright bathroom or similar setting. Growth only to about 4 inches high, and 5                                                                                    inches wide. The pink foliage adds some color to the interior setting. Medium to high light is preferred. Medium                                                                                           moisture requirements.
Cycas revoluta..................................................King Sago - Indoors, this plant can often do better than in the landscape. It is easier to maintain potential pest (scale)                                                                                 problems indoors, with a systemic insecticide. The deep green foliage, and horizontal, spreading habit of the foliage                                                                                    make it nice to use where it can be viewed from above. It can use a relatively large amount of space (horizontally).                                                                                      Tolerant of dry soil conditions, it would prefer some moisture in the soil though.

Large, light green, fan shaped foliage, some serration. Spines on the                                                                                 leaf branch.

  M
Macho Fern....................................................Nephrolepsis biserrata - A very tough and durable fern, well suited to the interiorscape. Preferes moist soil, with high                                                                                   organic content, medium to high light. Relatively large growing fern, under ideal conditions, the fronds, or branches can                                                                                reach a length of 4 or 5 feet! This is not so likely to occur in most interiorscape settings though.
Madagascar Palm.........................................Pachypodium lamerei - Technically this is not a palm, but a succulent. The growth habit, which is upright, gives the plant                                                                             a 'palm' shape, hence the name. The trunk is covered in thorns, and the leaf is deep green, length up to 24 inches. This                                                                               plant does have a white flower, although we have yet to see one reach this point.

Maidenhair Fern............................................Adiantum spp.- Lacy, feathery foliage. These perform at their best when provided with ample moisture and a cool location.                                                                          Filtered light is desired, and it is best to keep them away from a hot, bright south facing window. A soil high in organic                                                                                material is preferred.
Manila Palm...................................................Veitchia merillii, Adonidia Palm, Christmas Palm - When used indoors, these prefer a relatively bright location.
Marginata.......................................................Draceana marginata - This plant can be found in many different shapes and sizes. From a small plant with several tip                                                                                  cuttings in the pot, to a large specimen with several canes in the pot, several feet in height. The canes are sometimes                                                                                 trained into spiral, cadelabra, or other shapes to make very interesting specimens. The foliage is deep green, with                                                                                       burgundy colored stripes, often about 24 inches long, and an inch wide.
Medinilla magnifica.......................................Medinilla - Not often available, usually through special order. A very interesting plant, although difficult to keep, not                                                                                      recommended for the beginner. Often carries a high price tag. Large medium green foliage, with flowers being borne on                                                                                pendicels at the tip of the branch. Pink flowering, clusters. Requires high amounts of nutrients, and a soil high in organic                                                                             material. Medium to high moisture requirements.
Ming Aralia.....................................................Polyscias fruticosa - Very fine, elegant foliage, medium green. Typically available in smaller pots, although this can grow                                                                             to be a beautiful large specimen. Relatively slow growth rate. Medium light, and moisture requirements.
Miniature Schefflera.......................................Schefflera arboricola 'Luseanne' - Very full, compact growth habit.
Money Tree....................................................Pachira glabra - Relatively new introduction to our region. Used indoors in the U.S., and as a landscape plant in Asia.                                                                                 Not much information is available to us about the growth habits of this plant in our region. Often it is sold as somewhat of                                                                            a novelty plant, usually 3 plants in a pot, braided. We have kept specimens growing in the greenhouse for several years,                                                                              where they have attained a height of 6 feet and are still growing under indoor conditions. Medium moisture and light.
Monstera delisciosa.....................................Swiss Cheese Plant - Often sold growing on a totem, or in hanging baskets. This plant can either climb, or hang,                                                                                        depending upon growing conditions. Large deep green foliage, with holes throughout, such as swiss cheese. Tolerant of                                                                              low to high light, and medium moisture requirements.
Moth Orchid....................................................Phalaenopsis Orchid - The most common of indoor orchids. Good for beginners, and attractive enough for experts. Each                                                                              cultivar will have slightly different growing requirements, be sure to enquire at the time of purchase as to your specific                                                                                  one. Available in whites, pinks, purples, and many different mixes, spots, stripes, etc.
